In the past year a popular bonus has emerged where if you put an accumulator on and one section let you down, the bookie would refund the amount as a free bet. I believe it was William Hill that pioneered this on the mobile site. I remember just logging in to my mobile so I could get the acca insurance. Back then it was 5 teams and they even allowed the free bets to roll over. So many times, I missed out, got a free bet and with that free bet, got another free bet. Those days have gone now though. Its now 6 teams instead of 5.

You can play the accumulator anyway you want but to maximise value I find adding 3-4 bankers in the accumulator with a 1-2 even money shots thrown in to get the value up. For example, in the Euro Qualifiers you get some mismatches. Georgia to beat Gibraltar is 1.05, Hungary to beat Faroe Islands 1.3 and England Estonia, 1.16. Put those 3 in with another couple of selections and you have a double with much better odds and a free bet if one of your teams let you down.
Bookmakers like accumulators as it multiplies the advantage a bookmaker has. For example, if a bet has a 5% margin, then a five-fold accumulator has a 28% margin (1.05^5). They get stung every so often when all the favourites come in but love it when bankers such as Liverpool or Arsenal let punters down.
Watch out for minimum odds though. Some bookmakers might stipulate that odds must be of 1.5 or over to claim.
